Let’s Experience ‘Sustainable Development’ with ‘Climate Action Net Zero’
So far, we have carried out numerous development activities for economic progress which have caused enormous greenhouse gas emissions in the process. These emissions have led to a dangerous state of global warming and now the world is facing serious threats from climate change including various kinds of natural disasters and anomalies.
For our planet earth, it may be ideal to put an end to greenhouse gas emission and to save the environment right away, but practically it is not an easy decision.
That is why conventions on climate change came up to set targets and obligations for cutting down greenhouse gas emissions.
In this game, you will be a wise policy maker who protects the environment without giving up economic development.
With the awareness of global warming risks, you will limit the amount of greenhouse gas emissions and try to make our planet a better place through sustainable development.
This ‘Climate Action Net Zero’ board game will help you understand the concept of climate conventions and offer you an indirect experience of national policy making and a chance to find solutions to deal with climate crises that we are facing.
Preliminary Information
- The purpose of the game
To achieve sustainable development through compromise and discussions by curbing green house gas emissions and preventing climate disasters.
- Winner
A px-layer who earns the most Zero Cash after 4 rounds becomes the winner. Set
A set means each px-layer plays one card in turn.
It is also possible for all the px-layers to put down the cards at the same time.
- Round
One round is completed after 4 sets of game.
At the end of each round px-layers calculate the number on the general cards they played and decide who gets or pays Zero Cash.
Px-layers need to carefully hand out general cards considering current global warming level and carbon emission target.
Zero Cash indicates profits from development using Carbon Cards and also benefits from green energy by playing Environment Cards.
Therefore, the goal of the game is to achieve sustainable development: controlling emissions while pursuing economic development.
A px-layer who has made the best balance between development and environmental conservation wins the game.
To better understand climate conventions of governments, the game requires px-layers to cooperate to prevent climate disasters by checking carbon emissions and to find ways for sustainable development.
The game can be more fun if px-layers consider themselves as representatives of their country at the negotiation table for climate conventions.
Basic Rules
Direct profits can only be made by using Carbon Cards.
However, excessive use of Carbon Cards means more greenhouse gases causing global warming.
As global warming gets serious, more climate disasters take place.
Px-layers who do not use Carbon Cards can also be the victims of these disasters.
Effects of serious global warming level are irreversible.
Environment Cards control the rise of global warming level by offsetting Carbon Cards.
However, Environment Cards cannot make any direct profits.
Through conventions carbon emission target is decided by px-layers.
If emissions go over the target, px-layers need to pay Zero Cash but if they succeed in reducing emissions, then they earn Zero Cash instead.
If px-layers compete only to win the game, in other words to earn more Zero Cash, global warming is unavoidable and catastrophic end will await.
In order to curb global warming, carbon neutrality must be achieved.
It is necessary to expand cooperation and consensus for carbon neutrality to reduce the serious impacts of climate disasters.
